#1 - Dispose
OCRRA offers directions and guidance for residents to properly dispose of used sharps and syringes in their residential trash (see below). This guidance does not apply to schools and businesses in our community. A business or organization that has a sharps collection program should contact the local or state department of health and/or contact an environmental firm that is properly permitted by the state to manage biohazard medical waste.
INSTRUCTIONS for RESIDENTS:
NEVER place containers of sharps (needles, syringes, and lancets) in the recycling bin.
1) Several health centers and hospitals will accept sharps from residents. This encourages the safe disposal of sharps for people with medical conditions that require at-home, self-injections. Please call these locations to confirm hours and exact location for drop-off.
2) Several police stations will also accept sharps from residents to encourage safe disposal. The following police departments have confirmed they are able to collect sharps:
POLICE DEPARTMENT | ADDRESS |
Baldwinsville | 16 West Genesee Street, Baldwinsville, NY 13027 |
Cicero | 6200 State Rt 31, Cicero, NY 13039 |
Geddes | 1000 Woods Rd, Solvay, NY 13209 |
Marcellus | 6 Slocombe Avenue, Marcellus, NY 13108 |
North Syracuse | 600 South Bay Road, North Syracuse, NY 13212 |
3) Sharps can also be placed in clean, biohazard-labeled sharps containers or in clean, heavy plastic bleach or laundry detergent bottles with a screw-on cap. Containers must be leak-proof, labeled as “Sharps” and the tops should be taped shut. Then they can go in the trash.
